Jose Juan ‘Katan’ Butrón Rodríguez

Hometown: Ejido Luis Encinas Johnson, Sonora

Katan was born in Mexicali, Baja California, but grew up and still lives in Ejido Luis Encinas Johnson. He enjoys fieldwork, birding, and wildlife in general, as well as fishing. Since 1997 Katan has collaborated with government agencies and non-profit organizations to protect the Ciénega de Santa Clara, including work with Pronatura Noroeste and the Comisión de Ecología para el Desarrollo Sustentable del Estado de Sonora (CEDES), where he conducted monitoring for birds, vegetation, soils, and hydrology, and conducted habitat restoration work. He has been birding for 12 years and works as a fishing and hunting guide for the ecotourism project in the Ciénega de Santa Clara.
